Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer Experience

Luxury Rail by Day

A Journey Designed Around the View

Rocky Mountaineer and Canyon Spirit transform the journey itself into the centerpiece of the vacation.

Travel through landscapes that highways often miss while hosts provide attentive service, regional storytelling, meals and beverages. Panoramic windows keep the scenery close, and daylight-only travel means the most dramatic portions of the route are not hidden by darkness.

These are not sleeper trains. At the end of each rail day, guests step off and spend the night in a hotel before continuing refreshed the following morning.

The Experience

More Than Transportation

The pace is intentionally unhurried. The train becomes a moving observation lounge, restaurant and storytelling space.

Panoramic Scenery

Oversized windows and glass-dome designs create wide views of mountains, rivers, forests, canyons and desert landscapes.

Regional Dining

Meals are served onboard and designed around the region, with beverages and attentive host service throughout the rail day.

Stories Along the Way

Hosts add context to the landscape with stories about local history, wildlife, geology, communities and engineering landmarks.

Restful Evenings

Included mid-route hotels provide a proper bed and a quiet night before the next scenic day aboard the train.

Four Distinct Rail Routes

Three journeys explore Western Canada. The fourth crosses the American Southwest under the Canyon Spirit name.

Route-by-Route

Which Journey Fits You?

Rocky Mountaineer • Two Rail Days

First Passage to the West

Vancouver ↔ Kamloops ↔ Banff or Lake Louise

The classic Canadian Rockies journey follows a historic rail corridor connecting the Pacific Coast with the mountain communities of Alberta.

  • Fraser Valley and dramatic river canyons
  • Spiral Tunnels and Kicking Horse Canyon
  • Crossing the Continental Divide
  • Easy pairing with Banff, Lake Louise or Calgary

A strong first choice for travelers wanting the iconic Vancouver-to-Banff experience.

Rocky Mountaineer • Two Rail Days

Journey Through the Clouds

Vancouver ↔ Kamloops ↔ Jasper

This route trades Banff for Jasper and follows the Fraser River toward some of the Canadian Rockies' most powerful scenery.

  • Hell's Gate and the Fraser Canyon
  • Pyramid Falls beside the rail line
  • Views toward Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies
  • Ideal for adding Jasper and the Icefields Parkway

Best for travelers drawn to Jasper's wilder atmosphere and dramatic waterfalls.

Rocky Mountaineer • Three Rail Days

Rainforest to Gold Rush

Vancouver ↔ Whistler ↔ Quesnel ↔ Jasper

The longest Canadian rail route moves through an extraordinary progression of coastal rainforest, mountain country and historic Cariboo landscapes.

  • Sea-to-Sky scenery and an overnight near Whistler
  • Remote lakes, ranchlands and gold-rush country
  • A second overnight in Quesnel
  • Mount Robson and arrival in Jasper

The choice for travelers wanting the most time aboard and the greatest variety of Canadian landscapes.

Canyon Spirit • Two or Three Rail Days

Rockies to the Red Rocks

Denver ↔ Glenwood Springs ↔ Moab or Salt Lake City

Formerly operated as Rocky Mountaineer's U.S. route, this journey now has its own Canyon Spirit identity while retaining the daylight rail format and hospitality-focused experience.

  • Two-day Denver–Moab journey with a Glenwood Springs overnight
  • Three-day Denver–Salt Lake City option with Glenwood Springs and Moab overnights
  • Continental Divide, Glenwood Canyon and Ruby Canyon
  • Easy combinations with Arches, Canyonlands and other national parks

Canyon Spirit uses Signature and Premier experience names rather than Rocky Mountaineer's SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf.

Two Brands, Different Service Names

The scenery is central at every level. The primary differences are railcar design, dining style, space, beverage selection and access to upgraded lounge or viewing areas.

Build the Complete Vacation

The Train Is the Centerpiece, Not the Entire Trip

Every rail journey includes required mid-route hotel nights. Packages can also add accommodations, transfers, sightseeing and extra destinations before or after the train.

Rail-Focused

Choose the core rail journey with its included mid-route hotel night or nights, then arrange your own stays at the beginning and end.

Rail + Hotels

Add convenient pre- and post-rail accommodations in places such as Vancouver, Banff, Jasper, Denver, Moab or Salt Lake City.

Extended Exploration

Build a broader vacation with guided tours, transfers, national parks, Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway, Calgary or another rail route.

A Different Style of Travel

Is This Experience Right for You?

  • You enjoy scenery and want the journey to be as memorable as the destination.
  • You appreciate attentive service, leisurely meals and a relaxed pace.
  • You prefer sleeping in a hotel rather than an onboard compartment.
  • You want a polished way to connect several Western destinations.
  • You value a carefully coordinated itinerary over piecing together every transfer yourself.

A useful expectation

This is a scenic luxury experience, not high-speed transportation. Rail days can be long, arrival times may vary because the trains share active rail corridors, and the rhythm is intentionally slow. For the right traveler, that unhurried pace is exactly what makes the journey special.
